CNetID
Chicago Network ID. Your CNetID is your account name on the NSIT system. You will use your CNetID as your email address (i.e., where the CNetID is "janedoe," janedoe@uchicago.edu is the email address on the University system). Your CNetID is also used as your account name or login ID when you connect securely to your UNIX account at harper.uchicago.edu; when you read your email using Thunderbird or Webmail; when you authenticate to the University modem pool from off campus; when you use the wireless network; and in most situations where an account name of some sort is required.
NSIT began providing CNetIDs in the Fall of 1999. If you established some account services prior to Fall of 1999, you may have a Ph-alias in addition to your CNetID.
Please note that your CNetID is your account name, NOT a password.
Directory
Directory Account. The Directory account is essentially an on-line campus directory entry. Information like your name, your department, and your email address will appear in this directory once you establish your CNet password. You may modify certain fields of your Directory listing, such as your phone number and address. You may also add fields, such as a FAX number field, or a text field listing your homepage URL.
You may also choose to redirect your CNetID@uchicago.edu canonical email address to an address outside of the NSIT systems. Please note that all students of the College and students in many of the graduate departments are mandated to keep the email addresses that they establish in the NSIT Claims process in the email field of their Directory listings.
UNIX
UNIX Operating System. NSIT maintains a UNIX login server at harper.uchicago.edu. Services provided on this server include programming tools, file storage, and email clients. Additionally, if you choose to set up a personal web page at the University, you will set up a directory in your UNIX account to which you will upload your web page files.
